She appreciated having a gang of new friends. Their company distracted from the inevitable loneliness that would sometimes settle over her in her grief.
When the train arrived in Toronto, Savery and Giselle shared a final dinner together before going their separate ways.

The reservedness that marked their first meal together had all but melted away. It was an evening marked by laughs, recalling favorite memories of the trip across Canada and talking about their lives back home.

The next day, they said goodbye. Appropriately enough, their farewell took place at a train station.

“I was taking the airport shuttle to fly back home to Boston, and Giselle was taking the train to Montreal. So we said, ‘Well, let’s just say goodbye at the train station, since we’re both going to be there at the same time tomorrow,’” recalls Savery.

“We were under the big clock in Toronto station, and she was watching the clock. She said, ‘I really gotta go. I have to catch my train.’ And I just… I said, ‘I can’t not see you again.’”

Their connection didn’t feel romantic — both Giselle and Savery were sure of that. But it felt significant. Both Savery and Giselle felt they’d met a like-minded soul, someone who could be a confidant, who could help them through the next chapter of life which they were unexpectedly navigating alone.

Saying “goodbye” felt too final. So Giselle, who is French-Canadian, suggested they say “au revoir” — which translates as “until we meet again.”

And as soon as they went their separate ways, Giselle and Savery started texting each other.

“Then the texts became phone calls,” recalls Savery.

On these calls, Giselle and Savery spoke about their lives, about what they were up to, about their interests.

“Music was like a common interest that we both shared,” recalls Giselle.

Savery is older than Giselle, and their music references spanned “different eras of music, but very compatible musical interests,” as Giselle puts it.

On one of their phone calls, Giselle mentioned she was considering booking a train trip across North America.

Soon, she and Savery were planning a train journey across the US for the fall of 2024, together.

And in the meantime, Giselle invited Savery to visit her in her home in Victoria, Canada, for a week’s summer vacation.

Giselle Ruemke was a Canadian traveler in her 50s who had, it turned out, a number of things in common with Savery Moore.

For one, she’d always wanted to travel across Canada on The Canadian. “Taking the train was one of these bucket list things for me,” Giselle tells CNN Travel today.

And, like Savery, Giselle’s spouse had recently died of cancer.

Giselle and her late husband Dave had been friends for decades before they started dating. Within a few whirlwind years they’d fallen in love, got married and navigated Dave’s cancer diagnosis together.

Then Dave passed away in the summer of 2023, leaving Giselle unmoored and unsure of the future.

In the wake of her grief, booking the trip on The Canadian seemed, to Giselle, “like a good way to connect with myself and see my country, refresh my spirit, a little bit.”

Like Savery, Giselle had always dreamed of taking the VIA Rail Canadian with her late spouse. And like Savery, she’d decided traveling solo was a way of honoring her partner.

“That trip is something that I would have really liked to have done with my husband, Dave. So that was why I was taking the train,” Giselle says today.

But unlike Savery, Giselle hadn’t booked prestige class. She admits she was “sticking it to the man” in her own small way by sitting in the reserved seats that first day.

She’d only moved when Savery arrived. She tells CNN Travel, laughing, that she’d thought to herself: “I better get out of the seat, in case someone prestige wants to sit in that spot.”

Giselle didn’t tell Savery any of this in their first conversation. In fact, she didn’t share much about her life at all in that first encounter.

But Giselle liked his company right away. He was friendly, enthusiastic and respectful — sharing that he was a widower and indicating he knew about Giselle’s loss without prying about the circumstances.

But when the couple finally retired in their 60s, leaving New York City for a small town in Massachusetts, they were excited for a new chapter and new opportunities.

“We both retired the same day,” Savery tells CNN Travel today. “We looked forward to having our life forever, together.”

Savery and Jan finally looked into booking their dream trip on VIA Rail’s “Canadian” service, a luxury train journey that winds from the West Coast of Canada to the East over four days.

“We were going to spend some money and take The Canadian in a class called ‘prestige,’ which is VIA Rail’s most expensive way to travel,” says Savery.

This was a “bucket list trip,” explains Savery. The couple wanted to splurge, figuring “we were only going to do this once, so let’s just do it right.”

But just as they started planning the trip, life took an unexpected turn.

“Jan was diagnosed with cancer, and it was lung cancer, and it was aggressive,” explains Savery. “Within a month-and-a-half to two months after her being diagnosed, the cancer had already spread.”

In the months that followed, Jan had brain surgery. She was enrolled in a couple of clinical trials.

Similar hype plays out every hurricane season, especially at the beginning: A cherry-picked, worst-case-scenario model run goes viral, but more often than not, will never come to fruition.

Unofficially dubbed “ghost storms” or “ghost hurricanes,” these tropical systems regularly appear in weather models — computer simulations that help meteorologists forecast future conditions — but never seem to manifest in real life.

The model responsible this week was the Global Forecast System, also known as the GFS or American model, run by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. It’s one of many used by forecasters around the world.

All models have known biases or “quirks” where they tend to overpredict or underpredict certain things. The GFS is known to overpredict tropical storms and hurricanes in longer-term forecasts that look more than a week into the future, which leads to these false alarms. The GFS isn’t alone in this — all models struggle to accurately predict tropical activity that far in advance — but it is notorious for doing so.

For example, the GFS could spit out a prediction for a US hurricane landfall about 10 days from now, only to have that chance completely disappear as the forecast date draws closer. This can occur at any time of the year, but is most frequent during hurricane season — June through November.

It’s exactly what’s been happening over the past week as forecasters keep an eye out for the first storm of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season.
Why so many ghosts?
No weather forecast model is designed in the exact same way as another, and that’s why each can generate different results with similar data.

The reason the GFS has more false alarms when looking more than a week out than similar models – like Europe’s ECMWF, Canada’s CMC or the United Kingdom’s UKM – is because that’s exactly what it’s programmed to do, according to Alicia Bentley, the global verification project lead of NOAA’s Environmental Modeling Center.

The GFS was built with a “weak parameterized cumulus convection scheme,” according to Bentley. In plain language, that means when the GFS thinks there could be thunderstorms developing in an area where tropical systems are possible – over the oceans – it’s more likely to jump to the conclusion that something tropical will develop than to ignore it.

Other models aren’t built to be quite as sensitive to this phenomenon, and so they don’t show a tropical system until they’re more confident the right conditions are in place, which usually happens when the forecast gets closer in time.

The western Caribbean Sea is one of the GFS’ favorite places to predict a ghost storm. That’s because of the Central American gyre: a large, disorganized area of showers and thunderstorms that rotates over the region and its surrounding water.

The collapse of a crucial network of Atlantic Ocean currents could push parts of the world into a deep freeze, with winter temperatures plunging to around minus 55 degrees Fahrenheit in some cities, bringing “profound climate and societal impacts,” according to a new study.

There is increasing concern about the future of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation — known as the AMOC — a system of currents that works like a giant conveyor belt, pulling warm water from the Southern Hemisphere and tropics to the Northern Hemisphere, where it cools, sinks and flows back south.

Multiple studies suggest the AMOC is weakening with some projecting it could even collapse this century as global warming disrupts the balance of heat and salinity that keeps it moving. This would usher in huge global weather and climate shifts — including plunging temperatures in Europe, which relies on the AMOC for its mild climate.

What’s less clear, however, is how these impacts will unfold in a world heated up by humans burning fossil fuels.

“What if the AMOC collapses and we have climate change? Does the cooling win or does the warming win?” asked Rene van Westen, a marine and atmospheric researcher at Utrecht University in the Netherlands and co-author of the paper published Wednesday in the Geophysical Research Letters journal.

This new study is the first to use a modern, complex climate model to answer the question, he told CNN.
The researchers looked at a scenario where the AMOC weakens by 80% and the Earth is around 2 degrees Celsius warmer than the period before humans began burning large amounts of fossil fuels. The planet is currently at 1.2 degrees of warming.

They focused on what would happen as the climate stabilized post-collapse, multiple decades into the future.

Even in this hotter world, they found “substantial cooling” over Europe with sharp drops in average winter temperatures and more intense cold extremes — a very different picture than the United States, where the study found temperatures would continue to increase even with an AMOC collapse.

Sea ice would spread southward as far as Scandinavia, parts of the United Kingdom and the Netherlands, the research found. This would have a huge impact on cold extremes as the white surface of the ice reflects the sun’s energy back into space, amplifying cooling.

Riverbank erosion is degrading the environment and displacing communities in the area. Photographer Masood Sarwer said in a press release that the photo depicts the “slow violence” of climate change: “These are not sudden disasters, but slow-moving, relentless ones — shaping a new category of environmental refugees.”

Another photo, taken by Aung Chan Thar, shows children fishing for trash in Inle Lake, Myanmar. The lake was once a pristine natural wonder but now faces the growing threat of plastic pollution. “This image of children cleaning the water symbolizes the importance of education and collective action in preserving our environment for a sustainable future,” he said.

Organizers hope that the exhibition will help to humanize the climate crisis. “Our mission is to inspire new perspectives through photography,” said Pauline Benthede, global vice president of artistic direction and exhibitions at Fotografiska, the museum of photography, art and culture that is curating the exhibition at the summit. “It draws attention to the human rights issue at the heart of global warming, which affects both the world’s landscapes and the people that live within them.”

NASA is defending its budget proposal, with a nod toward the lab’s future.
“NASA’s GISS has a significant place in the history of space science and its work is critical for the Earth Science Division, particularly as the division looks to the future of its modeling work and capabilities,” NASA spokesperson Cheryl Warner said in a statement.

“Fundamental contributions in research and applications from GISS directly impact daily life by showing the Earth system connections that impact the air we breathe, our health, the food we grow, and the cities we live in,” Warner said.

GISS has a storied history in climate science on the global scale.

A nuclear fusion power plant prototype is already being built outside Boston. How long until unlimited clean energy is real?

In an unassuming industrial park 30 miles outside Boston, engineers are building a futuristic machine to replicate the energy of the stars. If all goes to plan, it could be the key to producing virtually unlimited, clean electricity in the United States in about a decade.

The donut-shaped machine Commonwealth Fusion Systems is assembling to generate this energy is simultaneously the hottest and coldest place in the entire solar system, according to the scientists who are building it.

It is inside that extreme environment in the so-called tokamak that they smash atoms together in 100-million-degree plasma. The nuclear fusion reaction is surrounded by a magnetic field more than 400,000 times more powerful than the Earth’s and chilled with cryogenic gases close to absolute zero.

The fusion reaction — forcing two atoms to merge — is what creates the energy of the sun. It is the exact opposite of what the world knows now as “nuclear power” — a fission reaction that splits atoms.

Nuclear fusion has far greater energy potential, with none of the safety concerns around radioactive waste.

SPARC is the tokamak Commonwealth says could forever change how the world gets its energy, generating 10 million times more than coal or natural gas while producing no planet-warming pollution. Fuel for fusion is abundant, derived from deuterium, found in seawater, and tritium extracted from lithium. And unlike nuclear fission, there is no atomic waste involved.

The biggest hurdle is building a machine powerful and precise enough to harness the molten, hard-to-tame plasma, while also overcoming the net-energy issue – getting more energy out than you put into it.
“Basically, what everybody expects is when we build the next machine, we expect it to be a net-energy machine,” said Andrew Holland, CEO of the Fusion Industry Association, a trade group representing fusion companies around the globe. “The question is, how fast can you build that machine?”

Commonwealth’s timeline is audacious: With over $2 billion raised in private capital, its goal is to build the world’s first fusion-fueled power plant by the early 2030s in Virginia.

“It’s like a race with the planet,” said Brandon Sorbom, Commonwealth’s chief science officer. Commonwealth is racing to find a solution for global warming, Sorbom said, but it’s also trying to keep up with new power-hungry technologies like artificial intelligence. “This factory here is a 24/7 factory,” he said. “We’re acutely aware of it every minute of every hour of every day.”

The precise details of the “victory plan” Zelensky plans to present in separate meetings to President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris are unknown, having been closely held until they are presented to the American leaders.

But according to people briefed on its broad contours, the plan reflects the Ukrainian leader’s urgent appeals for more immediate help countering Russia’s invasion. Zelensky is also poised to push for long-term security guarantees that could withstand changes in American leadership ahead of what is widely expected to be a close presidential election between Harris and former President Donald Trump.

The plan, people familiar with it said, acts as Zelensky’s response to growing war weariness even among his staunchest of western allies. It will make the case that Ukraine can still win — and does not need to cede Russian-seized territory for the fighting to end — if enough assistance is rushed in.

That includes again asking permission to fire Western provided long-range weapons deeper into Russian territory, a line Biden once was loathe to cross but which he’s recently appeared more open to as he has come under growing pressure to relent.

Even if Biden decides to allow the long-range fires, it’s unclear whether the change in policy would be announced publicly.

Biden is usually apt to take his time making decisions about providing Ukraine new capabilities. But with November’s election potentially portending a major change in American approach to the war if Trump were to win, Ukrainian officials — and many American ones — believe there is little time to waste.

Trump has claimed he will be able to “settle” the war upon taking office and has suggested he’ll end US support for Kyiv’s war effort.

A deadly Israeli airstrike on Hezbollah’s stronghold in southern Beirut on Friday has left over a dozen people dead, including a high-ranking Hezbollah commander, sharply escalating the conflict between the two sides and raising fears of all-out war.

Senior Hezbollah commander Ibrahim Aqil, part of Hezbollah’s elite Radwan Force, was assassinated along with “about 10” other commanders, Israel Defense Forces (IDF) spokesperson Daniel Hagari said, accusing them of planning to raid and occupy communities in Galilee in northern Israel.

Hezbollah confirmed Aqil’s death on Friday, saying he was killed “following a treacherous Israeli assassination operation on 09/20/2024 in the southern suburbs of Beirut.”

According to Hagari, the targeted commanders were “underground underneath a residential building in the heart of the Dahiyeh neighborhood, using civilians as a human shield” at the time of the attack.

Lebanon’s health ministry said at least 14 people were killed and 66 others injured in the airstrike, which leveled a multistory building in a densely populated neighborhood.

Aqil had a $7 million bounty on his head from the United States for his suspected involvement in the 1983 strike on the US Embassy in Beirut, which killed 63 people, as well as the bombing of the Beirut Marine barracks, which killed 241 US personnel later that year.

A CNN team on the ground in Beirut saw a frantic effort to rescue people from underneath the rubble and rush the wounded to hospital. Witnesses said nearby buildings shook for nearly half an hour after the strike, which the IDF said it had carried out at around 4 p.m. local time.

A week of surprise attacks
Friday’s strike marked the fourth consecutive day of surprise attacks on Beirut and other sites across the country, even as Israeli forces continued deadly strikes and operations in Gaza and the occupied West Bank.

The first major attack against Hezbollah this week came Tuesday afternoon when pagers belonging to the militant groups’ members exploded near-simultaneously. The pagers had been used by Hezbollah to communicate after the group’s leader, Hassan Nasrallah, encouraged members to switch to low-tech devices to prevent more of them from being assassinated.

Almost exactly 24 hours later, Lebanon was rocked by a second wave of explosions, after Hezbollah walkie-talkies detonated in Beirut and the south of the country on Wednesday.

At least 37 people were killed, including some children, and more than 3,000 were injured in the twin attacks.

It’s hard to pin down the exact number of preppers in the US. Mills says 5 million is a reasonable estimate; others would say much higher. Chris Ellis, a military officer and academic who researches disaster preparedness, puts the figure at around 20 to 23 million using data from FEMA household surveys.

После того, как в 23 марта в полном соответствии с уставом голосами 12 уполномоченных кооперативных участков из 14 председателем кооператива была избрана экс-заместитель Крючека Салтанат Камзиевна Салимянова, Моисеев провел новые, уже вторые выборы себя председателем – опять среди своих лжеуполномоченных.  У Георгия Моисеева не было шансов избраться по уставу. Все 14 уполномоченных кооперативных участков – против Моисеева.    Единственный путь для него – лжевыборы, липовые протоколы об избрании. С этими липовыми протоколами Моисеев пришел к московскому нотариусу (поскольку петербургские все были предупреждены через нотариальную палату города) и за взятку получил нотариальное заверение. А потом подал документы на внесение изменений в ЕГРЮЛ о том, что он является новым председателем.  Из-за протестов буквально сотен пайщиков кооператива, написавших заявления в налоговую, внесение изменений было приостановлено, а затем по иску одной из пайщиц был вынесен судебный запрет на изменения в ЕГРЮЛ.  При этом Моисеев не оставляет попыток провести еще третьи выборы – понимая, что несколько десятков подписей его сторонников и подельников на фоне численности кооператива более 15 тыс. пайщиков будут выглядеть неубедительно. Моисеев организовал обзвон пайщиков и отправку писем – якобы от имени кооператива, чтобы подтвердить их персональные данные, так как актуальной базой пайщиков он не располагает.  ВредительПараллельно Георгий Моисеев начал откровенно вредить кооперативу – за защиту которого на словах он борется. Он написал жалобу в Росфинмониторинг – по которой кооператив уже не один месяц мучают проверкой. Он «просигнализировал о нарушениях» в прокуратуру – которая с его помощью дополнила апелляционное представление по поводу принятого Приморским районным судом решения о полном снятии ареста с одного из трех счетов кооператива.  Моисеев рекрутировал также своих сторонников, чтобы они выступили в Санкт-Петербургском городском суде при рассмотрении этого апелляционного представления с парадоксальными речами – о том, что они против разблокировки счетов. При этом о новых доводах, которые будут заявлены в самом заседании, о выступлении свидетелей кооператив прокуратурой не был предупрежден – понятно, что кооператив бы представил в суде не один десяток пайщиков, выступающих за разблокирование финансовых ограничений.  Общими усилиями Моисеев и прокуратура добились в Санкт-Петербургском городском суде отмены решения Приморского районного суда в части разблокировки одного из счетов кооператива. Параллельно Георгий Моисеев начал агитационную кампанию по неуплате в кооператив возвратных платежей за приобретенную недвижимость и членских взносов. Еще одну жалобу Моисеев написал в Роскомнадзор, что привело к перебоям в работе нового официального сайта кооператива, так как ранее сайт блокировался по обвинению в том, что кооператив привлекает новых членов. Сейчас новых членов кооператив не принимает, но блокировки по старой памяти применяются. При этом сайт – основное средство взаимодействия с пайщиками.  То есть Моисеев, на словах призывающий к возобновлению покупки кооперативом квартир, на деле торпедирует эти усилия, лишая кооператив возможностей для постепенного восстановления работы. Но то, что Моисеев выступал координатором программы судебной защиты, позволило ему сформировать реноме победителя в судах, в том числе в Верховном, хотя реальными авторами победы были юристы, разрабатывающие концепцию защиты, работавшие в рамках этих дел. Пустившись в самостоятельное плавание, юридическими достижениями Моисеев похвастаться не может. Потому что главное, в чем профессионал Моисеев, – в разводе на деньги.  Главная задача Моисеева сейчас – собрать на «срочносборах» деньги на работу альтернативных органов кооператива и еще на выдуманную им историю: якобы он нашел в российской компании под названием «Гермес» активы австрийской Hermes и с помощью «сильной адвокатской фирмы из Москвы» сможет их взыскать – а для этого нужно также собрать деньги на предварительный юридический анализ и работу юристов.  Люди, знакомые с Моисеевым, говорят о том, что для него никогда не было своих и чужих: единственное, что для него значимо, – заработок.  Цель Моисеева в борьбе с кооперативом: шантажом заставить руководство кооператива с ним договариваться, включить его в руководство кооператива и выделить долю в немалом фонде, формируемом из вступительных и членских взносов. Но его шантаж не сработает. А после того, как Моисеев проиграет в борьбе за власть в кооперативе, он предъявит к кооперативу претензии от клиентов Hermes Management – совершенно забыв о собственных речах в защиту кооператива. Последние акты «творчества» Моисеева позволяет его остановить – привлечь к ответственности по целой гирлянде статей ГК и УК, чем и занимаются адвокаты кооператива и пострадавших от действий этого черного юриста.

The big headlines are that Maxwell doesn’t implicate anybody – including Trump – in any wrongdoing and says Epstein didn’t have a client list. But those statements might carry more weight if Maxwell came clean about her and Epstein’s own misdeeds.

But Epstein’s seven-story townhouse in Manhattan was outfitted with cameras, the New York Times reported earlier this month. Several of Epstein’s victims have cited a network of hidden cameras.

“But when I had all these acting jobs coming up, I thought, ‘Okay, okay, how are you going to manage this and have a life?’ Because that hasn’t always been easy for me. I’m an all or nothing kind of girl,” added Pfeiffer.

“I always like taking on challenges and then I get into it and it’s sort of sink or swim and for whatever reason I kind of feed on that,” she said, before going on to suggest that her priorities have shifted recently.
