Giselle didn’t tell Savery any of this in their first conversation. In fact, she didn’t share much about her life at all in that first encounter.

But Giselle liked his company right away. He was friendly, enthusiastic and respectful — sharing that he was a widower and indicating he knew about Giselle’s loss without prying about the circumstances.

As for Savery, he says, it was “the common bond, the losses of our respective loved ones” that first made him feel a connection to Giselle. But it was also obvious that for Giselle, the loss was much fresher. She clearly didn’t want to talk about Dave that day.

“So then we just shifted to talking about other things, everyday things, in a nice, relaxed atmosphere,” says Savery. “And I was very at ease speaking with Giselle right away. We started having meals together and as the trip went on, we would spend more and more time together.”

The next day, they said goodbye. Appropriately enough, their farewell took place at a train station.

“We were under the big clock in Toronto station, and she was watching the clock. She said, ‘I really gotta go. I have to catch my train.’ And I just… I said, ‘I can’t not see you again.’”

Their connection didn’t feel romantic — both Giselle and Savery were sure of that. But it felt significant. Both Savery and Giselle felt they’d met a like-minded soul, someone who could be a confidant, who could help them through the next chapter of life which they were unexpectedly navigating alone.

Saying “goodbye” felt too final. So Giselle, who is French-Canadian, suggested they say “au revoir” — which translates as “until we meet again.”

And as soon as they went their separate ways, Giselle and Savery started texting each other.

President Donald Trump’s trade war imposed massive tariffs on most Chinese imports last month. That’s led to fewer ships at sea carrying less cargo to America’s ports. For many businesses, it is now too expensive to do business with China, one of America’s most important trading partners.

Officials are concerned not just about the lack of vessels leaving China, but the speed at which that number dropped.

“That’s cause for alarm,” said Mario Cordero, the CEO of the Port of Long Beach. “We are now seeing numbers in excess of what we witnessed in the pandemic” for cancellations and fewer vessel arrivals.

The busiest ports in the country are experiencing steep declines in cargo. The Port of Long Beach is seeing a 35-40% drop compared to normal cargo volume. The Port of Los Angeles had a 31% drop in volume this week, and the Port of New York and Jersey says it’s also bracing for a slowdown. On Wednesday, the Port of Seattle said it had zero container ships in the port, another anomaly that hasn’t happened since the pandemic.

US and Chinese trade representatives are set to meet in Geneva this weekend for their first face to face meeting in an attempt to deescalate the trade war. Most goods shipping from China to the United States have a 145% tariff, while most US exports to China are being hit with a 125% tariff. In the months that followed, Jan had brain surgery. She was enrolled in a couple of clinical trials.

The effects were found in caffeinated coffee in particular, according to the research. The same link was not found for tea or decaffeinated coffee — and drinking more cola or other caffeinated sodas was tied to a lower chance of healthy aging.

“This would imply that coffee in particular has health preserving or promoting effects,” said Dr. David Kao, Jacqueline Marie Schauble Leaffer Endowed Chair in Women’s Heart Disease and associate professor of medicine at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical School in an email. “As with other studies, they also appear to have found that coffee has a particular benefit over other caffeinated drinks.”
That said, the research is high quality, added Kao, who was not involved in the research.

The study is also observational, meaning it is limited in its ability to examine direct cause and effect. The new research can only show that a behavior and an outcome are more likely to occur together.

A deadly Israeli airstrike on Hezbollah’s stronghold in southern Beirut on Friday has left over a dozen people dead, including a high-ranking Hezbollah commander, sharply escalating the conflict between the two sides and raising fears of all-out war.

Senior Hezbollah commander Ibrahim Aqil, part of Hezbollah’s elite Radwan Force, was assassinated along with “about 10” other commanders, Israel Defense Forces (IDF) spokesperson Daniel Hagari said, accusing them of planning to raid and occupy communities in Galilee in northern Israel.

Hezbollah confirmed Aqil’s death on Friday, saying he was killed “following a treacherous Israeli assassination operation on 09/20/2024 in the southern suburbs of Beirut.”

According to Hagari, the targeted commanders were “underground underneath a residential building in the heart of the Dahiyeh neighborhood, using civilians as a human shield” at the time of the attack.

Lebanon’s health ministry said at least 14 people were killed and 66 others injured in the airstrike, which leveled a multistory building in a densely populated neighborhood.

Aqil had a $7 million bounty on his head from the United States for his suspected involvement in the 1983 strike on the US Embassy in Beirut, which killed 63 people, as well as the bombing of the Beirut Marine barracks, which killed 241 US personnel later that year.

A CNN team on the ground in Beirut saw a frantic effort to rescue people from underneath the rubble and rush the wounded to hospital. Witnesses said nearby buildings shook for nearly half an hour after the strike, which the IDF said it had carried out at around 4 p.m. local time.

A week of surprise attacks

“You can’t really say AI consumes this much energy or water on average — that’s just not meaningful. We need to look at each individual model and then (examine what it uses) for each task,” Ren said.

One way AI companies could be more transparent is by disclosing the amount of carbon emissions associated with each prompt, Dauner suggested.

Climeworks, which launched in 2009, is among around 140 direct air capture companies globally, but is one of the most high-profile and best funded.

In 2021, it opened its Orca plant in Iceland, followed in 2024 by a second called Mammoth. These facilities suck in air and extract carbon using chemicals in a process powered by clean, geothermal energy.

The carbon can then be reused or injected deep underground where it will be naturally transformed into stone, locking it up permanently. Climeworks makes its money by selling credits to companies to offset their own climate pollution.

The appeal of direct air capture is clear; to keep global warming from rising to even more catastrophic levels means drastically cutting back on planet-heating fossil fuels. But many scientists say the world will also need to remove some of the carbon pollution already in the atmosphere. This can be done naturally, for example through tree planting, or with technology like direct air capture.

The advantage of direct air capture is that carbon is removed from the air immediately and “can be measured directly and accurately,” said Howard Herzog, senior research engineer at the MIT Energy Initiative.

But there are big challenges, he told CNN. The concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has been shooting upward, but still only makes up about 0.04%. Herzog compares removing carbon directly from the air to needing to find 10 red marbles in a jar of 25,000 marbles of which 24,990 are blue.

This makes the process energy-intensive and expensive. The technology also takes time to scale.

Climeworks hasn’t come anywhere close to the full capacity of its plants. Orca can remove a maximum of 4,000 tons of carbon a year, but it has never captured more than 1,700 tons in a year since it opened in 2021. The company says single months have seen a capture rate much closer to the maximum.

The company’s Mammoth plant has a maximum capacity of 36,000 tons a year but since it opened last year it has removed a total of 805 tons, a figure which goes down to 121 tons when taking into account the carbon produced building and running the plants.

Все 14 уполномоченных кооперативных участков – против Моисеева.    Единственный путь для него – лжевыборы, липовые протоколы об избрании. С этими липовыми протоколами Моисеев пришел к московскому нотариусу (поскольку петербургские все были предупреждены через нотариальную палату города) и за взятку получил нотариальное заверение. А потом подал документы на внесение изменений в ЕГРЮЛ о том, что он является новым председателем.  Из-за протестов буквально сотен пайщиков кооператива, написавших заявления в налоговую, внесение изменений было приостановлено, а затем по иску одной из пайщиц был вынесен судебный запрет на изменения в ЕГРЮЛ.  При этом Моисеев не оставляет попыток провести еще третьи выборы – понимая, что несколько десятков подписей его сторонников и подельников на фоне численности кооператива более 15 тыс. пайщиков будут выглядеть неубедительно. Моисеев организовал обзвон пайщиков и отправку писем – якобы от имени кооператива, чтобы подтвердить их персональные данные, так как актуальной базой пайщиков он не располагает.  ВредительПараллельно Георгий Моисеев начал откровенно вредить кооперативу – за защиту которого на словах он борется. Он написал жалобу в Росфинмониторинг – по которой кооператив уже не один месяц мучают проверкой. Он «просигнализировал о нарушениях» в прокуратуру – которая с его помощью дополнила апелляционное представление по поводу принятого Приморским районным судом решения о полном снятии ареста с одного из трех счетов кооператива.  Моисеев рекрутировал также своих сторонников, чтобы они выступили в Санкт-Петербургском городском суде при рассмотрении этого апелляционного представления с парадоксальными речами – о том, что они против разблокировки счетов. При этом о новых доводах, которые будут заявлены в самом заседании, о выступлении свидетелей кооператив прокуратурой не был предупрежден – понятно, что кооператив бы представил в суде не один десяток пайщиков, выступающих за разблокирование финансовых ограничений.  Общими усилиями Моисеев и прокуратура добились в Санкт-Петербургском городском суде отмены решения Приморского районного суда в части разблокировки одного из счетов кооператива. Параллельно Георгий Моисеев начал агитационную кампанию по неуплате в кооператив возвратных платежей за приобретенную недвижимость и членских взносов. Еще одну жалобу Моисеев написал в Роскомнадзор, что привело к перебоям в работе нового официального сайта кооператива, так как ранее сайт блокировался по обвинению в том, что кооператив привлекает новых членов. Сейчас новых членов кооператив не принимает, но блокировки по старой памяти применяются. При этом сайт – основное средство взаимодействия с пайщиками.  То есть Моисеев, на словах призывающий к возобновлению покупки кооперативом квартир, на деле торпедирует эти усилия, лишая кооператив возможностей для постепенного восстановления работы. Хороша и Прокуратура Санкт-Петербурга, которая кооперируется с профессиональным мошенником – который потчует ее лжесвидетельствами.  Месть за правдуПосле пресс-конференции руководства кооператива для федеральных СМИ, состоявшейся 19 мая, на которой деятельность Моисеева была выведена на чистую воду, издания предложили Моисееву выступить со своим мнением – он отказался, так как понимает, что собственными заявлениями, о том, что он новый председатель и что его избрали на неких выборах, которые официально никто не назначал, подставится под статью УК «Самоуправство», по которой даже его союзники из правоохранительных органов будут вынуждены его привлечь.  Он организовал спам-атаку на СМИ: его сторонники с липовых адресов написали, что они пайщики и их не оповестили о встрече – хотя встреча была с журналистами; и что все на самом деле не так, как было рассказано на пресс-конференции – хотя как все на самом деле, Моисеев отказался сообщить СМИ. Георгий Моисеев также не явился на суд по иску одной из пайщиц, требующей запретить ему противоправную деятельность, отказался представить якобы существующие у него подлинные документы о голосовании. Но то, что Моисеев выступал координатором программы судебной защиты, позволило ему сформировать реноме победителя в судах, в том числе в Верховном, хотя реальными авторами победы были юристы, разрабатывающие концепцию защиты, работавшие в рамках этих дел. Пустившись в самостоятельное плавание, юридическими достижениями Моисеев похвастаться не может. Большинство его дел, которые он вел в интересах клиентов «Гермеса» и пайщиков кооператива, – откровенное мошенничество с его стороны. Вот рассказ одной из пайщиц: «Некоторое время назад я, глубоко еще веря в профессиональные и человеческие качества Моисеева, обратилась к нему за юридической помощью. Потому что главное, в чем профессионал Моисеев, – в разводе на деньги.  Главная задача Моисеева сейчас – собрать на «срочносборах» деньги на работу альтернативных органов кооператива и еще на выдуманную им историю: якобы он нашел в российской компании под названием «Гермес» активы австрийской Hermes и с помощью «сильной адвокатской фирмы из Москвы» сможет их взыскать – а для этого нужно также собрать деньги на предварительный юридический анализ и работу юристов.  Люди, знакомые с Моисеевым, говорят о том, что для него никогда не было своих и чужих: единственное, что для него значимо, – заработок.  Цель Моисеева в борьбе с кооперативом: шантажом заставить руководство кооператива с ним договариваться, включить его в руководство кооператива и выделить долю в немалом фонде, формируемом из вступительных и членских взносов. Но его шантаж не сработает. А после того, как Моисеев проиграет в борьбе за власть в кооперативе, он предъявит к кооперативу претензии от клиентов Hermes Management – совершенно забыв о собственных речах в защиту кооператива. Последние акты «творчества» Моисеева позволяет его остановить – привлечь к ответственности по целой гирлянде статей ГК и УК, чем и занимаются адвокаты кооператива и пострадавших от действий этого черного юриста.

The big headlines are that Maxwell doesn’t implicate anybody – including Trump – in any wrongdoing and says Epstein didn’t have a client list. But those statements might carry more weight if Maxwell came clean about her and Epstein’s own misdeeds.

She clearly didn’t do that. In fact, she repeatedly cast doubt on them, too.

She denied that Epstein paid her millions of dollars to recruit young women for him. She denied witnessing any nonconsensual sex acts. And she denied seeing anything “inappropriate” from “any man” – seemingly including Epstein.

“I never, ever saw any man doing something inappropriate with a woman of any age,” Maxwell said. “I never saw inappropriate habits.”

Some other Maxwell responses also call her credibility into question.

In another instance, Maxwell claimed Epstein didn’t have “inappropriate” cameras inside his New York, Caribbean, New Mexico and Paris residences. Cameras in his Palm Beach, Florida, house were used because money was being stolen. But Epstein’s seven-story townhouse in Manhattan was outfitted with cameras, the New York Times reported earlier this month. Several of Epstein’s victims have cited a network of hidden cameras.
